About Steve

Hi, my name is Steve Halligan,

Thank you for visiting my website and I hope you enjoy reading about some of my adventures.

Myself and my wife Mary Jo spent 15-plus years living in Hanmer Springs, New Zealand.

After working in my trade as a carpenter up until 2014, Mary Jo and I  then fused our talents and abilities and set up a Dream vision, Vibrant Living Retreat.

Here we created a wellness centre, where we offered a peaceful place of healing, detox, pampering, nutrition and natural surrounds..

It was during my first year in New Zealand, that I became curious about mountain biking. I had, of course, ridden bikes growing up, but never racing or riding single track. I bought a bike, entered some local races, and that was it, I was hooked big time…

I started off doing heaps of cross-country races around the South Island; then I entered some 100km plus races which I really enjoyed. My passion for cycling was now full force and extra bikes were added to the man cave.

Over the years, especially since doing my first Kiwi Brevet, I’ve come to love the Bikepacking events and style of riding.  I love the unsupported aspect, the sense of adventure, the freedom and simply being out there in nature riding through amazing landscapes, off the beaten track over long distances.  I love racing and the competitive aspect of events like Tour Divide and Terra Australis Bike Epic.

I really enjoy the physical, mental and emotional challenges that these Ultra Endurance adventures make me face and the sense of achievement when it’s completed.

I am truly grateful for these opportunities I have to ride through countries on personal quests, that grow me as a person and give me a huge sense of purpose.

After selling Vibrant Living and moving on from Hanmer Springs, 2024 has been a transitionary year. I broke my leg in February during the Tour Te Waipounamu race, recovering while house/pet sitting all around New Zealand. I have developed my Holistic Endurance Program, which is support, coaching and guidance for people new to the sport and experienced riders. I am very excited to share what I know from 10 years of Ultra-Endurance racing. https://www.holisticendurance.life
